Legal Term
Non-Compete Clause
Legal Definition
A contractual provision that restricts a party from engaging in similar business activities within a defined geographic area and time period after the contract ends. In freelance agreements, these are often buried in lengthy terms, similar to hidden fees in online purchases.
In Plain English
It's a rule in your contract that says you can't work for competitors after you leave. Like when you buy something online and agree to terms that later limit what you can do with it.
Example in a Contract
Contractor shall not, during the Term and for twelve (12) months thereafter, directly or indirectly provide Social Media Management services to any entity that competes with Client's primary business within a 50-mile radius of Client's headquarters.
