Legal Term

Change Order Enforcement

Legal Definition

A contractual mechanism requiring clients to provide written authorization and agree to associated costs before a freelancer performs work beyond the original project scope. It creates a binding obligation for the client to pay for those additional services, preventing disputes over whether extra work was requested or approved.

In Plain English

When a client asks for more work outside the original deal, you need a 'change order' signed first. If you skip that and they refuse to pay later, the contract might not protect you.

Example in a Contract
> **Section 5: Changes and Additional Services** > No work beyond the defined Scope of Services in Exhibit A shall commence without a fully executed Change Order. A Change Order must specify the additional work, the adjusted fee, and any revised timeline. Client acknowledges that any verbal requests or implied consent for additional work do not constitute approval and that Freelancer is under no obligation to perform such work without a signed Change Order. All Change Orders are subject to the payment terms in Section 3.
