Legal Term
Model Release
Legal Definition
A model release is a signed legal document where an individual (the model) grants permission to use their likeness in photographs or other media. The usage rights scope defines the specific parameters of that use, such as purpose, duration, territory, and exclusivity, which businesses must carefully review when contracting photographers to avoid overreach or limitations.
In Plain English
It's a form that says you can use someone's photo for your business. But you gotta check the fine print—like if it's only for Instagram or forever—so you don't accidentally give away too much or box yourself in.
Example in a Contract
5. License Grant. The Model hereby licenses the Client to use the Photographs solely for the Client's internal marketing and social media promotions within the State of California for a term of two (2) years. The Client may not alter the Photographs or license them to any third party without the Model's express written consent. All other rights remain with the Photographer.
